Meditation Momentum

by Alex Charfen

Episode Description

I don't meditate.

I can't meditate.

I don't want to meditate.

I hear all of these from entrepreneurs when I asked them the simple question “do you meditate?” I understand why. For people like us who can't turn it off and don't know why anyone would want to, the idea of clearing our minds seems impossible and unnecessary. The way meditation is presented by most people who have figured it out it's so ambiguous and difficult to understand that it makes just about anyone feel like they can't get there.

Meditation isn't about clearing your mind, having a spiritual or religious experience. There is a better way to look at this that will create massive momentum for you and for everyone around you.

I'm Alex Charfen, and this is the Momentum Podcast, made for empire builders, game changers, trailblazers, shot diggers, record breakers, world makers, and creators of all kinds. Those among us who can't turn it off, and don't know why anyone would want to. We challenge complacency, destroy apathy, and we are obsessed with creating momentum, so we can roll over bureaucracy and make our greatest contribution. Sure, we pay attention to their rules, but only so that we can bend them, break them, then rewrite them around our own will. We don't accept our destiny. We define it. We don't understand defeat, because you only lose if you stop, and we don't know how. While the rest of the world strives for average and clings desperately to the status quo, we are the minority, the few who are willing to hallucinate there could be a better future, and instead of just daydreaming of what could be, we endure the vulnerability and exposure it takes to make it real. We are the evolutionary hunters, clearly the most important people in the world, because entrepreneurs are the only source of consistent positive human evolution, and we always will be.

Meditation momentum. The entrepreneurs I work with are not normal entrepreneurs. They are the hardest charging, hardest driving, most overwhelmingly momentum-driven entrepreneurs on the planet. I work with a company right now that I mention all the time, Gym Launch. I can't stop talking about them, because I think they're doing things in the world that no entrepreneur has ever done. The couple that runs the organization, Alex and Leila Hormozi, are absolutely amazing. In fact, in the last six or seven months, they have gone from a couple million dollars a year to I think a $15 million run rate and growing, and the profitability levels they are hitting are outrageous. There's a reason. They are two of the most talented entrepreneurs I've ever met in my entire career. The only reason I'm able to coach them, given their level of talent and ability, is that I'm over 20 years ahead of them. If I wasn't, they would be coaching me. They're absolutely amazing.

They are at the point where they've gone from three to over 25 people on their team in a seven-month period, and growing. It's growing a lot. They have six or seven open positions right now, and they might have more. So in the middle of all of that, how do you stay grounded? How do you stay connected? How do you stay moving forward, and how do you adjust to the constant state of behavioral change that is created by momentum that large?

See, every entrepreneur wants to grow a business fast. Every entrepreneur wants a multi-million dollar company. Every entrepreneur I've ever worked with wants to go out and hit levels of success no one ever has. But very few entrepreneurs are willing to commit to the level of behavioral change it takes to become the person who can run a multi-million dollar, world-changing company. Most entrepreneurs just aren't willing to do it.

The level of behavioral change is absolute, because when you go from starting up a business to long-term scale and growth, everything you do changes. It doesn't matter if you do the same activity. You're going to do the same activity in a different ecosystem, so everything you do will change. As entrepreneurs, how do we stay on top of this overwhelming amount of behavioral change on a day to day basis, when no two days are the same? How do you find foundational stability, and stay in your body so you are fully present and aware?

Well, the best way I've found so far, or one of the best ways, and ... One of the tools I use, maybe is a better way to put it ... is meditation. Now, this morning ... The reason I brought up Alex and Leila was this morning, I sent Leila a message. I said, "Hey, Leila. Are you meditating yet?" And she answered back, "No. You know, I'm not meditating. I do yoga. It's a lot easier for me when I do yoga because, you know, it's moving, and I just had a hard time sitting still and clearing my mind." And I think that every entrepreneur would tell you something similar about the first time that they were ever introduced to meditation. I know I felt that way.

And so, I left her a message back and said, "Leila, I think it's time. I really think you should consider this. And I want you to go and look at the Muse Headband for meditation, because it is an easy way to get a three-minute meditation, where you get feedback so you actually know if you're improving. And on a daily basis, it will help you get more centered and aware." In fact, I had another client this week leave me a message about just how amazing having this headband was, and being able to meditate, and how much more present he feels. His name's Jay [Baraby 00:04:53], and he's growing an incredible real estate business in Florida. Jay let me know he even shared the headband with his team members. In fact, he left me a few messages on it. I might do a podcast in the future so that I can share just how dynamic it's been within his company.

This morning, here's the message I got back from Leila. She said, "Oh my gosh. You just said three minutes. I can do three minutes. Anyone can do three minutes. Okay, I'll order the Muse Headband today." Well, here's one of the reasons why I love this product so much, is that in really three minutes ... In fact, you can even lower your meditation session to two ... But in three minutes a day, as a daily discipline, I have seen radical changes in my clients using this product. Because for the first time ever, without spending tens of thousands of dollars, you can meditate, and get feedback, and an understanding of how you're doing, through putting a simple Bluetooth headband on your forehead, and using your iPhone or your any phone to be able to get the metrics. And in three minutes, you will find yourself increasing your level of presence, your level of awareness, your ability to understand what's going on, and your ability to just be there and be in your body.

That is exactly how we create success as entrepreneurs. We create success through our ability to be present. We create success through our ability to be aware. We create success through our ability to see the future. And we can't do that when there's too many things flying around in our minds, and we can't slow down and be present. And by using the Muse, or by simply meditating for three minutes a day, you will find that you calm your body, become more present, and radically increase the awareness you have.

This is one of the fastest shortcuts to creating momentum that I know, as an entrepreneur. It's one of those ways that we can foundationally lower the pressure and noise. In three minutes, you massively reduce the pressure and noise you are feeling, and you leave more in the tank every day. By meditating for just three minutes, you allow the body to calm down, to reassess, to reset, and then you can go after it even harder. And by meditating for just three minutes, you give yourself that small break that you need, so that you can come back at full force. Because here's what most entrepreneurs do all day, every day: They get up, as fast as they can, find the accelerator pedal, stand on it, and they're there all day, until at the end of the day, there's absolutely nothing left. Completely worn out and falling apart, for the most part. Because we've left it all on the field, and left nothing in the tank.

Being depleted, being broken down, feeling completely exhausted, is not a badge of honor. That's how you should feel occasionally. That's how you should feel only on the days where you really need to. As an entrepreneur, creating awareness, being present, being able to see what's going to happen next, comes from having resources left in the tank. Feeling energetic. Feeling vibrant. Feeling vital. Those are the things that will help you actually create momentum as an entrepreneur.

This is one of the most rewarding time investments you can make, because if you're willing to meditate a couple times, once a day or a couple times a day, or even before major events during the day, you will quickly start putting gas back in the tank. But it's disproportionate. A three-minute meditation may give you two or three hours of momentum. I know that when I'm gonna get on an important call, or a sales webinar, or going to an event that's really important to me, I will meditate, because I know that it super charges my time there. It gives me so much more out of the time I'm already going to spend.

So if you're not meditating yet, like so many of us out there who don't feel like we can, I have a suggestion for you. Go to charfen.com/muse, and you'll be able to download two things. A discount code for the Muse headband, so that you can try it just like I have, and I know you will become a believer. And, you can download my two-minute tactical meditations absolutely free. You don't have to buy anything. You can start trying this right now. The meditations that I recorded are fast. They're two minutes. Because here's what I want you to see. Meditation isn't about clearing your mind and flying to other astral planes, and becoming some type of a guru, which is how it's presented. And it's so frustrating for me, because most people who have figured out meditation present it in such an ambiguous and confusing way that it makes everyone else feel like they can't do it.

The fact is, here's what meditation is. It's taking a short period of time where you slow your breathing. Breathe in and out through your nose exclusively. You don't do anything else but sit there and breathe. You allow your system to reset, you allow calm to come over you, and you feel a physiological contrast from when you started, to when you finish. And if you're willing to go to charfen.com/muse, and download the two-minute meditations that I recorded, right now you can try one and see. What is the contrast from before you started, to after?

Here's what I want you to feel. Did the tension in your shoulders release? Did the tension in your forehead release? Do you feel like your lungs are more expanded? Do you feel more present, more aware, more vibrant, more able to do more? Because when I meditate, that's exactly what happens. This is why I created those meditations. This is why I use the Muse headset. Because for me, I invest a little bit of time, and I get back massive amounts of presence, awareness, consciousness. And let's be honest. All of those create ridiculous momentum.

Are you ready for some meditation momentum? Go to charfen.com/muse. Download the three two-minute meditations that I recorded. Try them out. Breathe in and out through your nose. And you're gonna feel this incredible time investment, where you take a small fraction of time, like three minutes, and you can go out and create momentum for hours.
