As an entrepreneurial personality type, as an evolutionary hunter myself, my entire life, my entire career, I've been chasing transformation and momentum and creation of something new and radically optimizing and improving myself. And I have a totally different take on where optimization improvement and yes, even transformation comes from. I can't wait to share it with you.

I'm Alex Charfen and this is the Momentum podcast. Made for empire builders, game changers, trailblazers, shot takers, record breakers, world makers, and creators of all kinds. Those among us who can't turn it off and don't know why anyone would want to. We challenge complacency, destroy apathy, and we are obsessed with creating momentum so we can roll over bureaucracy and make our greatest contribution. Sure, we pay attention to their rules, but only so that we can bend them, break them, then rewrite them around our own will. We don't accept our destiny. We define it. We don't understand defeat because you only lose if you stop and we don't know how. While the rest of the world strives for average and clings desperately to the status quo, we are the minority, the few who are willing to hallucinate there could be a better future. And instead of just daydreaming of what could be, we endure the vulnerability and exposure it takes to make it real. We are the evolutionary hunters, clearly the most important people in the world, because entrepreneurs are the only source of consistent, positive human evolution. And we always will be.

In the world of evolutionary hunters, I think every one of us is seeking momentum. We are seeking forward progress, transformation, transmutation, the creation of new things in our lives and the optimization of who we are moving forward and creating new outcomes. And changing the status quo is just who we are and it's what we've always wanted to do. Now, I think there's kind of a fallacy, maybe even a challenge with how we discuss and how we approach transformation in the entrepreneurial world. Here's my impression and see if this resonates with you. My impression is that we're often sold the idea, maybe even the fantasy, that transformation happens in a moment. There's this time and space and we're in the right place and we transform into something totally new. We change. We move in the right direction. We become something new in some interim or some moment. And here's my experience with transformation, with personal growth, with creating momentum, with moving your life forward, with even optimizing your life. My experience is that without process, structure and routine transformation doesn't happen.

And here's why I say this. You know, there's a lot of experiences out there. There's a lot of events out there. There's a lot of things we can do that feel like we're making a ton of forward progress, that feel like we're changing our lives, where we're learning, we're getting new insights, we're creating new nerve synapses in our brain are new, new ways of thinking. But until we commit to the daily process of applying what we've learned, until we commit to the daily habit of executing what we learned, we won't have a transformation.

Let me give you a simple example. Easiest example I can use, and it's an example I'm really passionate about. You know, one of the things that I always try and encourage entrepreneurs and anybody else that I meet to do is to hydrate, to drink water. I actually think water is a vehicle for a transformation. I often joke with people, hydration is a gateway drug to success. Or water is a gateway drug to success. And I think sometimes people think I'm joking or just trying to make a point, but I actually mean that. Let me just explain how I believe transformation happens from getting hydrated. I've done a ton of research on this subject, so much research that when I'm around doctors or scientists or people in the medical community and talking about hydration, oftentimes they take my answers and move forward. In fact, there's been at least three doctors, three practitioners that have taken the natural thirst challenge that I wrote about ten years ago and have added it to either books or products that they have. At one point there was a clinic that used our natural thirst challenge as part of their patient onboarding program. I am a little obsessed with water. Here's why: I believe that as entrepreneurial personality types, as evolutionary hunters hunters with very sensitive nervous systems, the more we optimize and the more we support our very sensitive nervous systems, the more we make progress in the world, the more we see opportunities, the more we make the unique connections that create the outcomes we want to be responsible for in the world. The more that we see the opportunity to create what we want in the world.

And so if you wake up one day or you go to an event or you see a post on Facebook that says, ‘Hey, you should drink more water’, and you tell yourself, ‘Hey, I'm going to drink more water.’ And you really think about it and you push yourself to do it, you may actually hydrate and start a transformation. But what happens most of the time is that we think about drinking more water. We know we are not drinking enough water. We know we're probably dehydrated. We bring that thought into our mind and we don't really drink a lot more water. We just have an awareness. It's passing, it's fleeting and it goes away. So here's what happens if we build water into our lives. So in the Natural Thirst challenge, I tell people the easiest way to drink water is to follow three steps. Number one, wake up in the morning, drink six ounces or more of water to let your body know that water's available and to activate your natural thirst to have water with you all day. If you don't have water with you, you will not drink water. So have water with you all day. And three, if you think about water, drink. If you look at your water bottle, if you think to yourself, ‘Oh, I should have a sip’. If you are noticing the water bottle, that is your body's very subtle, natural thirsty instinct letting you know that you should drink. And so if you do those three things, that's some simple process and structure to bring water into your life. Here's what ends up happening. You might drink some more water. You might be better hydrated. Well, when you're dehydrated, here's what happens in your body and here's what happens in your physiology. Dehydration causes inflammation, water retention, depression, anxiety, the symptoms of ADHD, ADHD. It can make your brain fog. It can make it so that you're not clear on what you should do next. You can get lethargic, chronic fatigue. All of these are symptoms of not drinking water.

So if we reverse those, what does that mean? Drinking water can clear up brain fog. Drinking water can actually boost the metabolism. Drinking water helps you release toxicity from the body. Drinking water helps you focus more. It connects the mind and body more. And so if you get up and you hydrate for one day, there might be some forward progress, there might be some transition, there might be some moving in the right direction. But if you get up and you drink water every day and you've been in a chronically dehydrated state, now every day you're more connected, you're more aware, you're more present, you're more in your body ready to take on more responsibilities. You're ready to take on more outcomes. You're ready to do more. You actually get boosted from this simple habit of drinking water, and that creates transformation over time.

See, to me, transformation requires one the awareness that we're going to change something. And then two, the process of structure and routine through which we change it. How are we going to support that change? And in my career, I've helped a ton of entrepreneurs. At this point, thousands of entrepreneurs transform their lives, build better businesses, get closer with their spouses, their families, and get healthier themselves. And in 100% of cases like this is universal. Every single one of them required process, structure and routine. And to commit to this new set of habits, this new set of behaviors that created the transformation that moved people in the right direction. And the reason that I am so passionate about this, the reason that I study this so much, is because I think that as evolutionary hunters, we part of part of what we want to do on this planet, part of what we are driven to do, part of what calls to us is to create progress, to optimize, to move in the right direction, to make things happen. But very few people talk about how we need both the information and the process through which to do that, we need both the information and the structure that will make sure that we do the things that we need to do to transform. We need the information and the motivation, and we also need the routine that will make sure that these new habits, these new processes, this new way of being, is in our lives.

And I wish more people talked about this because I think that there is an entire world out there of evolutionary hunters, just like you and me, who feel like they should have transformed and they didn't. And here's what I mean by that. We go to a big motivational event. Everybody in the room is jumping up and down and, you know, dancing and screaming and massaging each other. And the music's going in, the speakers telling you how great everything is and you're feeling really motivated. You're feeling a lot of energy, you're feeling a lot of energetics. But then you leave the event and at the event you feel like my life has changed. At the event, you feel like, you know, this is so inspirational, this is so different. Nothing's going to be the same after this. But then you leave the event and there was no process or structure or routine or tactical way that you're going to bring that transformation into your life. And after maybe a few days, a few weeks, maybe even a few months of those happy chemicals and motivation and everything else, being in your body and being with you, it wears away. And you start wondering what really happened. And you look at this event you went to and, you know, it worked for everybody else, which, by the way, probably didn't. And so you start judging yourself and you start thinking you did something wrong. And the reality is you didn't do anything wrong. You just don't have the process, structure and routine to back up what you did. This is the key to transformation. This is the key to progress. This is the key to optimization as an entrepreneur, the proper process, structure and routine.

And here's what we need to make sure of for people like you and I. And that process of structure and routine must be minimum effective dose, which means it does not create more noise, which means the process, structure and routine is not so heavy that it slows you down, which means that the process, structure and routine supports the new habit, supports the transformation, but doesn't require anything else and doesn't have a lot of wasted steps or wasted time so that you can continue to optimize and create massive progress moving forward. And the reason that I'm so obsessed with this is that I've always been a goal achievement person. I've always been the person that stays with the entrepreneur until what they're trying to do happens and works through the challenges and works through the problems and makes sure that things actually move forward. Because in the world of ‘goal setting experts’, things are pretty easy. You just show people how to get really excited and say what they might want in their lives. But goal achievement, actually making things happen is totally different. Goal achievement requires process, structure and routine and some might say discipline. But here's what I know about discipline. Decision making, fatigue being what it is, us having to think about what we're doing. If we create if we want to move in a direction and we're creating new habits and we're using solely discipline, solely us remembering that we need to do it solely us pushing ourselves to do it without having process and structure to support it, It is infinitely more difficult than if we create process and structure in our lives to make that new habit. That new process, that new need that we have, that new direction that we want to go when we support it with process and structure. That is how life changes. Process will literally set you free if you let it.

And this can be simple. You know, I have a simple morning routine. I also have a simple schedule of what I want to do on what days of the week. And I do a lot to optimize. I hydrate, I eat well. I count macros. I do the sign of the cold plunge. I work out. I have a PM f machine. I walk a mile every day with my daughter. I make sure that I am optimized as I possibly can be, given the time constraints that I have. And I do that by making sure I have an efficient process and structure and schedule through which I get things done. Now, I know this isn't super exciting. If you listen to this, you're like, Man, he's talking about checklists and process and structure. But here's what is exciting. I know that this tactic or set of tactics is not the most exciting. But what's exciting is when you put process and structure in place and you improve your life on a daily basis, you hydrate just a little bit more. You walk a mile a day, you plan your morning. You have a morning routine. You start adding these things into your life. Each day gets easier. Each day can start creating more momentum. Each day you're more supported, more optimized, more ready to take on the world. And each day you will be moving towards the transformation you want. And that is exciting. That is exciting. Transforming, transmuting and growing and creating momentum as an evolutionary hunter is what we're all about. Process, structure and routine is this scaffolding, the support system, the foundation that will get you there if you're ready to transform.
